Many people have been trying to find information regarding various jailbreak solutions for their iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. When looking for a guide to successfully Jailbreak your iDevice, you often come across two terms. Tethered Jailbreak and Untethered Jailbreak. So, what exactly do these terms indicate.
What Does Tethered Jailbreak Mean?
Tethered Jailbreak means a temporary jailbreak. If your device is Tethered Jailbreak, that just means you have to hook up your iPhone or any other iDevice with your Laptop having iTunes each time your reboot it. Not really intuitive if you ask us. But, Tethered jailbreak is better than no-Jailbreak we reckon. So, under the circumstances if there is no Untethered Jailbreak available, you might want to go the tethered route. You have to install Cydia each time you reboot the iPhone or it runs out of juice. Needless to say, all Cydia apps like UltraSn0w (used for Unlock) have to be installed yet again.
What Does untethered Jailbreak Mean?
That brings us back to the Untethered Jailbreak. It is exactly what you might have guessed. It is a permanent Jailbreak (at least until your upgrade the device with official firmware package.) and that means rebooting the device won’t loose the jailbreak. You don’t have to install Cydia every time you reboot neither do you have to hook it up to your computer on each reboot.
So, should I go with Tethered Jailbreak or Untethered Jailbreak?
Untethered all the way. However, sometime the Dev team is able to provide with just the tethered Jailbreak because of they aren’t able to fully Jailbreak the firmware just yet. In this scenario, if you most certainly NEED to jailbreak – you should go for the Tethered Jailbreak. Do switch to the untethered jailbreak as soon as it becomes available.

With an untethered jailbreak, would you have the ability to remove it? I was checking out Redsn0w and wasn’t sure if i should get it or not because my screen is badly cracked and I need to get a new one, but I wouldn’t want to hand them a jailbroken product. I know it will be a while before I get it fixed so in the meantime, I would like to jailbreak it.

You can easily put the new, original firmware via iTunes on your device. Only way Apple will know is if they jailbreak it themselves and find out you have SHSH blobs saved with Cydia.
